Putting on a new face (jsonline)
After spending hundreds of dollars annually for Carpet cleaning, Jessica
Johnson was ready for an alternative.
She found one by literally poking around the edges.
A living room carpet in her West Allis home was the main culprit. The carpet,
on the first floor of the three-bedroom house, “was just a big magnet
for dog hair,” Johnson said.
“I pulled up one end of the carpet and discovered ‘Hey, these are
good floors,’” Johnson said of her late 2010 discovery. “So
I ended up pulling up the entire carpet.”
The oak Hardwood Flooring beneath was almost pristine. Johnson had found gold
beneath the carpet of her 1953 Cape Cod home, a trait not uncommon to houses
of that era. Fortunately the carpet had been stapled, not glued.
Her course of action was clear. Johnson decided to refinish the living room
floor, along with hardwood flooring in the first-floor hallway and adjoining
closets. She wasn’t about to do it by herself, though. The hallway
flooring was “pretty rough” and needed filling and patching in
places, Johnson said.
“I work full time and have a small child, so I’m OK with the idea
of paying someone and having it done,” …
